Did you see those people stitching as part of a window display?

During October 2011 3 craftivists were asked to create a craftivism window display in the independent bookshop News from Nowhere in Liverpool. The window was mutually beneficial: News From Nowehere were keen to support the Craftivist Collective (free advertising and selling our products) whilst we were super-keen to encourage people to buy books from this shop on activism, craft and political craft instead of buying from large chain stores. Independent bookshops are becoming far too rare.

We hung up our giant love letter we made at the Hayward Gallery (see here for more info on that project), propped up big photo boards showing some of the projects we have done and scattered craft stuff around the window such as thread, scissors.

We decided last minute that the window was big enough for us to have a break and stitch generic online pharmacy inside it. We got comfy with our coffee and started stitching. It was funny to watch the reaction of the public: some people didn’t see us, others looked a bit nervous until we smiled at them and some people even came in and asked us what we were doing and then asked if they could squeeze in! Hopefully the window display and craftivists inside it have stayed as memories in people’s minds and these memories have led to conversations about activism, politics, the power of craft and justice for many people.

The window display will be up for the entire month of November so please pop in and support this beautiful bookshop.
